Day 0: Setting Goals for Big Results

The 90-Day Year: Setting Goals for Big Results

A friend recently shared the concept of the "90-Day Year" with me (precursor - I have not read the associated book). The idea is simple but powerful: setting slightly larger MicroGoals over a 90-day period, rather than annual goals, makes tangible progress more attainable. This approach resonated deeply with me, as I reflected on my own journey.

In 2020 and 2021, I lost 45 pounds. Unfortunately, over the past year, I’ve regained 20-25 of those pounds, and it has been quite literally "weighing" on me. I’ve decided to take action and start this blog for a few key reasons:

  1. To lose weight and reclaim my health.

  2. To fulfill an elective in my Visionary Leadership Pathway for Toastmasters.

  3. To show up better for my family, friends, and employer, and ensure I’m around for a long time.

Starting Point

At this moment, I’m somewhere between the person I was in 2021 and the person I was in 2018. The good news? I’m confident I can lose 25+ pounds in the next 90 days. Achieving this goal comes down to making daily, binary choices that align with my objectives. By using habit tracking, I aim to make this process as straightforward as possible.

To illustrate my journey, here’s a visual starting point:

  • Left (2021): A healthier, fitter version of myself.

  • Right (2018): A version I’m determined to move away from again.

My Plan

To achieve my goal of losing 25lbs in 90 days, I’ll focus bettering my habits by:

  • Daily Tracking: I am going to simply weigh myself daily, intermittent fast daily, and track calories via MyFitnessPal.

  • Clear Goals: I’ve set MyFitnessPal to help me achieve a steady weight loss of 2 pounds per week, creating a structured and realistic plan.

Beyond Weight Loss: The Pipedream

As an added challenge, I have a pipe dream: to dunk a basketball. At 5'10" (and some change), with minimal basketball experience beyond CYO and adult pickup games, this might seem far-fetched. However, in 2021, I could easily dunk a tennis ball, so I’m curious to see if I can reignite this dream at 35. Perhaps by the end of this 90-day journey, I’ll be closer than I think.

Why This Matters

This journey isn’t just about weight loss; it’s about showing up as the best version of myself. For my family. For my friends. For my colleagues. And most importantly, for me. With determination, daily tracking, and the power of MicroGoals, I’m excited to see what the next 90 days will bring. I'm excited to share my health and fitness journey.

Let’s do this.
